While I realize plenty of people would read the blurb below and not think a thing of it. I'm not one of those people.

MADONNA AND JESUS GO ON A CRUISE
Most of us would have been happy with a cake and the good wishes of a few friends and family. But for her 51st birthday, Madonna opted for an altogether more exciting affair - and brought her 22-year-old lover, two adopted children and daughter along for the ride. The celebrations began on Sunday night when the singer hosted a sumptuous dinner party in the Italian resort of Portofino, where she is staying with her boyfriend Jesus Luz, her adopted children David Banda and Mercy James, and her daughter Lourdes. (The Daily Mail)

I find it curious and a bit annoying that there are two mentions of Madonna's children being adopted. They are her children--simple as that--no qualifier necessary. Now I know I'm a bit sensitive to this issue but the fact that they're adopted isn't part of the story.

During one of our pre-adoption groups, it was once mentioned that there was a write-up about George Burns on his deathbed with his 70-something-year-old adopted son at his side. Really, after 70 years "adopted" is still mentioned? Makes me crazy.

Okay, no back to my regularly scheduled crabby mood.

  1. I always liked Marie Osmond's answer, "I don't remember," when people asked her which of her children were adopted.

Let's gossip about Madonna's 22-year old boyfriend (WHAT?!) instead. That'll cheer you up. :)

  2. I always think the same thing. Every time they post something about Brand Angelina it is always the biological children....and adopted children....why cant it just be their children?

  3. That is so true. Your children are your children... doesn't matter how they got to you. And seriously... what is UP with her 22 y.o. boyfriend? That is just scandalous.

  4. I don't follow celebrity news.... NFW is Madonna dating a guy named Jesus! That is hysterical! Madonna and Jesus. LOL! I do agree with you, by the way. A parent and child are a parent and child. geez! (no pun intended)

  5. I am adopted and at 46 people still sometimes have a weird reaction to it. So silly. I hated the Barney years with my kids, but I loved the song, "a family is people and a family is love". Doesn't make any difference how a family finds its way to each other, just that it does.

  6. My husband was adopted. It wasn't a secret. But he was NEVER introduced as an adopted kid. Ever. I think they're making fun of Madonna in that article (which, go ahead, I make fun of Madonna all the time) so they are trying to come up with whatever they can to make her "less" of anything. Adopted children?! She must be less than a mom! It's a small dig that people probably wouldn't get, but the writer, I think, was being a snark. Snark ass.
Anyway, almost anyone can be a carrier of a baby. It takes a real woman to be a mom.
Now I feel like I'm gonna cry. Gawd it's been a bad week.

  7. It drives me crazy when the media refers to a child as "their adopted child." I like my friend's come back to that age old sibling taunt (which was true) "You were adopted!" She replied "Yeah, I was chosen but they had to take you!"

  8. Seriously, it's enough w. the adopted already. They were adopted, therefore they are her children.

I agree, let's make fun of the fact that she has a 22-yo boyfriend named Jesus, instead!

  9. I'm with you. Enough of the "adoption" crap. I find it rude.

  10. Fact is, the little things DO matter. It's like when they say that someone "suffers" from Down Sydrome or CP or whatever. Are they suffering? Do you know that? Can't you just say that they HAVE it?

  11. On an unrelated note. My brother was in Portifio staying at a villa NEXT DOOR to Madonna when they were there. Fireworks and all. My 187,000 degrees of separation and brush with fame.

  12. Madonna has a 22 year old lover?

Anyway, four of my nieces and nephews were adopted by my brother and sister-in-law. After the fourth had been adopted, my sister-in-law got accidentally pregnant. My mother-in-law said to me that she thought my mother was really hoping for a girl so she could have a granddaughter. Puzzled, I said maybe, but she already has two granddaughters - my nieces. My mother-in-law said "Oh, I meant a REAL granddaughter". I absolutely lost it. Even though this happened two years ago it still makes me incredibly angry.

  13. I meant to write "unexpectedly pregnant" not "accidentally".

  14. I agree. Totally unneccessary. The gossip should stick to the boyfriend.

  15. I agree with you. It was especially jarring the sentence that included "two adopted children" and "her daughter" (!)

I would edit that to read "her three children"

    Grrr....

  16. They always do that! You are so right. They also always mention if anyone is of a race other than caucasian. Who cares?

  17. My Gandmother always refered to her sister Anne as her adopted sister Anne. Poor thing she was adpoted 80 years ago but they always referred to her that way.

  18. I am sooooo with you on this. Those kinds of "little things" make a big difference to an adoptive family.

Is Bug into dinosaurs? If so, you will love the new PBS Kids show Jim Henson's Dinosaur Train for lots of reasons, but especially since the main character is adopted. We're so excited for G to watch it. Check my blog for details!
