It's Friday

Photobucket

I confess...

the other night when I gave Bug a kiss on his forehead I wondered if I accidentally bathed him using our dog's medicated shampoo instead of people shampoo. Even worse if I didn't, I need to quickly change shampoo choices for the little guy. Seriously, boy and dog should never smell the same--particularly when the boy is clean.
A shopping trip takes a bit longer these days--even before I leave the house--because Bug wants to help with the list. When he's writing the items as I spell the words, I keep the list short. At this point he can't make connect that he's written down four things and our big red cart has 782 items in it. I don't know if I've ever gone through the express check out at Target and mostly wonder why they have one...who gets out of Target with fewer than 10 items?. I quickly decided to carry Bug's mini list and my supersizeBugcanneverseelist as well.

I had a cupcake for breakfast today. How could I not? It was a gift--it's rude to not accept a gift, right?

My kindle and I are becoming very close.

Bits of nothing

I gave up sweets for lent and on the second day I had two separate dreams about eating candy and/or cookies.

Bug now calls farts "air poops."

I learned a couple of weeks ago that my job may be further downsized or possibly eliminated. Although if it happens it won't likely happen until July so I have plenty of time to fret over it.

I'm really ready for spring not so much the allergies that come along with the season though.

We are invited to Donnie's former girlfriend's daughter's wedding (that's a mouthful...there's probably an easier way to phrase that but I can't come up with it). The ex has already invited us to a dinner the night before with family (but not the wedding couple) and a few of her closest friends...the wedding is a few hours away and with babysitting issues, I doubt we'll go to that...just the wedding. I'm trying to prepare myself for awkward moments because I expect them to know they will happen.

All the thoughts in my head are just snippets of things. Not many things feel connected or finished (like this post, for example).

Bug's been waking up at least twice a night for a few weeks now. It's beyond old at this point. I'm longing for his good sleeping habits to kick in again.

I confess

Because this is what all the cool kids are doing...Glamazon and Mamarazzi are hosting and I'm a bit of a party crasher...it's the new me.
I confess...

I've been a horrible blogger and a horrible reader for awhile now. I swear I'm working my way back...I've got new glasses now (hey, kids, they're bifocals...oh wait, I can't be that old...they're "progressives" so now I have no excuse for not reading other than being a lazy slug).

I hate my new glasses.
I've had hot chocolate every day this week and one day I had it twice (the second one was a gift so that should be guilt-free, right?). It's such a winter treat for me so I try to tell myself I will only drink it on cold mornings. But...it's January so I declare every morning cold.

I didn't really mind getting back into the routine of work for Donnie and me and school for Bug this week. I did, however, mind the alarm going off five days in a row and having to actually GO to work.

Over the holiday break I said "dammit" so I could put myself in time out and get a little quiet break. HEAVEN!!!

I've become a wuss about needles. Yesterday I had to get blood taken for allergy tests. I have rotten veins so it took multiple tries in my arms. I was nearly hyperventilating by time the little tube was filled. I should have been given a lollipop or a sticker or a good stiff drink when it was over.
It's been so long since I've done laundry, I'm not sure I remember where our washing machine is or how to operate it. Guess what I'll be doing this weekend...

I'll never get those hours back...

Hmmm, why did I stay up to watch the One Hit Wonders of the 80s last night? I was flipping channels, heard a familiar song and the next thing I know I'm getting cozy on my couch and settling in to watch the countdown.

Worst of all...the #1 "One Hit Wonder" of the 1980s was Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners. Had I known that, I would have gotten my zzzzzzzzs earlier.

(It was kind of fun to see videos that I hadn't seen in ages from the early years of MTV: the hair, the makeup, the costumes...mostly, the hair!)

On a high note, I did find forgotten Easter candy and that tastes just as sweet in July...

Passover + Easter = Passter/Eastover

We've been reading The Little Red Hen and the Passover Matzah for a few days at our house. Bug gets a kick out of it and Donnie can give the right inflection to all the Yiddishness in the book. Tomorrow is Passover so we'll have a mini Seder (is there such a thing?) with just Donnie, Bug and me. I'll make the dinner that Donnie requested continuing the tradition of his family holidays growing up. Which reminds me I should really start looking for his mom's recipes...

By the end of the week we'll be getting out the Easter baskets and looking for the fake grass. Donnie's always a good sport and gives up something for lent so we're both looking forward to Sunday morning and having some chocolate and other sweets. (Sadly, Target was out of my favorite Easter candy this weekend...I wanted to stock up.) We also gave up Chinese food and I'm thinking our Easter dinner will be egg rolls, fried wontons and crispy beef! I just hope this Easter isn't a replay of a few years ago when I had so much chocolate that I watched The Sopranos with a heating pad on my stomach. Then again if it happens this year I'll just call it a family tradition.

Random Tuesday Thoughts

I’m afraid I have the Midas touch when it comes to electronics lately. I broke another computer over the weekend. Sigh…maybe it really is time for a typewriter. As soon as everything is back up and functioning at a greater than primitive level running, I’ll catch up on my blog reading.

Highlight of my day: getting a surprise hot chocolate delivery by Donnie at my office! Yes, I’m still having hot chocolate despite the editorial comment I received a couple of weeks ago.

Book suggestions, anyone? I just finished True Confections.
Hmmm, I discovered reading a novel about a candy company with vivid descriptions of candy can be damaging to a person's waistline and so I'm blaming my recent M&Ms binge on the book. And there was a random mention of one of my favorite candy bars made in Iowa that I can’t find on the East Coast so I'm craving that now and I've eaten the stash from my last visit to South Dakota. So what to read next…any thoughts?

hugs & chocolate...in your my face

Our babysitter is on vacation for two-plus weeks so things are a little all over the place at our house right now. I stayed home yesterday. Bug cried and screamed and cried some more when I dropped him off at preschool (he later told me he didn't think I was coming back).

Today at drop off he told me I gave him one too many hugs and asked me to wipe one off and gave me a serving of Mommy B Gone. Sigh...

On my way to work I decided it was a perfect day for hot chocolate. I stopped at a lovely little coffee place around the corner from my office. It's not a big chain and their hot chocolate is capital T--Terrific. I placed my order and the woman behind the counter asked if I wanted whipped cream. "Yes," I said. Then the conversation went like this:

Coffee Lady: You like whipped cream?
Me: Yes, of course.
CL: You like ice cream?
Me: Sure.
CL: You like all sweets?
Me: Yep.
CL: You're not so fat.

(Sigh...correction heavy sigh...)

Random Tuesday Thoughts

Check out the Santa giveaway here. (If I knew how to make a button I would do that and slap it on the side but this is all I've got.) Now onto randomness...

I have laryngitis. I'm almost sorry that this didn't happen several hundred years ago when I was a little girl and my brothers and I still lived under the same roof. They would love the fact that I can't talk and only a squeak comes out when I try.

My favorite new thing: Curbside Cupcakes! What's not to love about a bright pink vehicle that brings cupcakes to your door?! They've been near my office twice in the past week. Talk about turning a frown upside down...

On the subject of cupcakes...here's Bug with his birthday cupcake. It was the first time I tried an egg-free cake recipe. I'm always so nervous with new recipes and we had a few friends over so I made cupcakes rather than a whole cake in case the recipe and I had creative differences. I was fully prepared to run out and get a separate cake for our guests but I was happily surprised that the cupcakes were tasty.
What are the odds that I make it to South Dakota tomorrow? From all the weather reports I've heard I think Mother Nature might have it out for my travel plans.

I can read him like a cookbook

I decided that Bug and I should make cookies today. I've got the "Bakin' Without Eggs" cookbook and figured I would make cookies before I try egg-free cupcakes tomorrow for Bug's little birthday gathering. (Fingers crossed...the kitchen and I are often at odds with one another.)

I was so happy to find chocolate chips that are made in a facility that's peanut-free that I decided to make something chocolatey. So...Bug tried his first chocolate chips today and it was love at first bite as I'm sure it was for me so many years ago. Shortly after that we had the following conversation:

Bug: Mommy, you're skinny.
Me: Hmmmmm.
Bug: Mommy, you're funny, too.
Me: Bug, do you want something?
Bug: Of course...[verrrrrrrry long pause] I want more chocolate chips.

Mama needs a new pair of shoes...

Okay, needs might be a tad strong but wants is spot on. Maybe it's because I miss the back-to-school shopping...time will come when Bug will need back-to-school stuff but that's not here yet so I can be a little selfish--right? Right? Please?

So I'm thinking a new pair of shoes will be just dandy. When I return to work after the holiday weekend our office returns to business attire. Side Note: I hope I fit into my work clothes (damn those heavenly Nuggets that somehow ALWAYS end up in my shopping cart). I haven't tried on a thing that didn't qualify as casual since before Memorial Day.

BUT...shoes are another story. They're certainly not as fickle as those nasty skirts or suits with zippers and buttons that need to secure around my ever-increasing waistline (see Nugget reference above and tell me where to get some willpower) so I think shoe shopping is in my near future.

I'm thinking more fun than functional...something that can kick start a work outfit and make me think Mondays aren't nearly as bad while wearing good shoes. I did see a pair of shoes that made me drool a little but they were $139 so they won't be calling my closet home or tickling my toes. I want fun--not crazy. I can't remember where I saw them probably for the best or I would stalk them and that's pathetic even for me or I would share them with you but then you might want them too and if you're like me and am an "I won't/can't spend $139 for a pair of shoes" kind of gal then it's better if you don't see them. (See, I'm always thinking of you...)

For me it's all about the shoes...

I learned long ago to always wear good shoes to job interviews, meetings that make my stomach twist, parties where I don't know many people and anytime that I need a little boost. Looking at my feet and thinking, "damn, those are good shoes" will always give me a shot of confidence.

Years ago when I was in a job I hated, I told my friends when I wore my blue pumps (they were gorgeous...the leather, the heel, the POWER) they would know I was giving notice. So they became my "I quit my job shoes." I had another pair at the same time--green suede (I can't do them justice with words so I won't try) but they became my "beautiful shoes."

While I don't typically name my shoes, if I find a great pair this fall, they may just become my back-to-school shoes. Now if I can just find my DSW coupon (damn, why did I clean the house? Last week I knew exactly where it was).

Extra Postage Required

ShortMama at Family of Shorts and She's Just Another Manic Mommy put me in a letter writing mood...

Dear Hershey's,

You've been a part of my life for a long time and I've got the dental claims and extra pounds to prove it. Recently, I stumbled onto your Extra Creamy Milk Chocoate with Toffee & Almonds Nuggets. It's as though someone crawled into that section of my brain that thinks of chocolate eight days a week and knew that I would LOVE that combination.

Now, I know it's healthy to eat slowly so I eat them in two bites rather than all at once. It makes such a difference. And it's great that I don't have to go to a special boutique chocolate shop to purchase them. They're right there at the grocery store or drug store.

However, my thighs recently chatted with me. It was easy to hear them now that they rub together. They told me to lay off the Nuggets. My right thigh suggested I sue your company for making such a terrific snack-size, gotta-have-it, incredibly addictive bit of heaven since it seems to have overpowered any willpower I once had. My left thigh quickly stepped in (heh) to point out if I were to win the lawsuit I would no doubt negotiate the payment in chocolate rather than dollars and we (me, myself and my thighs) would be no better off.

The economy is still fighting its way back and while I hope your stocks don't suffer, I'm going to have to listen to my thighs and cut back on the Nuggets for awhile before one of my chins decides to speak up as well.

Hugs & Kisses (of course!),

A growing fan

PS. I still love you, you little devil...you know I'll be back.

What I'm doing on my summer vacation...

Eating.

The end.

PS. Really, all I'm doing is eating...with a little bit of napping, hanging at the beach and reading. We're on Cape Cod and I've had steak twice. I know, no lobstah yet but that's okay I'm more of scallops girl and those will come soon enough.

Thanks to my in-laws there was a pint of cantaloupe ice cream waiting for me when we arrived (after a TWELVE hour trip...gotta LOVE late night road construction where all lanes merge to one teeny tiny lane on major roads...fun!). It was 2am when we arrived and Bug had just awakened wanting to know where the sun was. He was beach ready--but luckily only for a little while before he went back to sleep. For the past two days after Bug's gone down for a nap my lunches have been cookies (great frosted cookies that I can't find in my neck of the woods). And I'm eating chocolate at the moment. I love vacation!

I've run once since we arrived so the balance is clearly off but I'm really okay with that.

chocolate goes straight to my ass

And now, sadly, I don't even have to eat it. Yesterday I sat on some and there was a trail of chocolate on my khaki pants...at work. Nice.
